Camping at Mega Mendung
.
_______There is a organization called “Uni Konservasi Fauna” in my University. This community concerns about the conservation of wild animals. Since the first time I heard about this community, I decided to participate. It was not only because I am studying veterinary medicine, but also because I love wild carnivore especially tiger. I think tiger is the funniest wild carnivore ever.
_______By joining this community, for the first time in my life, on December 27th 2009 I went to the real wild forest. I spent three days sleeping in the tent accompanied by the ground as my bed and the sky as my roof. This was my first experience and meant a lot for me. It was honestly a camping ground in the middle of the forest named “Mega Mendung” resort near Puncak, Bogor. I and the new friends I got in this community went there by a truck. Because the camping ground we targeted was a mountain, we could not get there without leaving the truck and walked for hours. I swore at that time I thought the place we targeted was too far that I spent my walking by grumbling and complaining. It had been hours but we had not arrived yet. It was not only the very long road that I hated but also the super hot sunshine and the heavy backpack.
_______Then, after walking and grumbling and walking and resting and walking again, we arrived in the camping ground. The tiredness I suffered for hours was just disappeared. The fresh cold air replaced the super hot sunshine. We made our tent immediately. My group consisted of five people. There were Wibi, me, Surya, Mitha, and Filuth (by clockwise)
_______Then we made our tent.
_______Every morning we did observation by group. We checked every wild animal we could find around our camping ground. I found some groups of birds I couldn’t identify, some species of monkeys and many more. But for everything, I really didn’t expect to meet any species of leech or any loathsome species which was creeping, wet, full of mucous, and could suck my blood. I hate leech so much. They are extremely disgusting. So, it was obvious that my superb mountain camping was haunted by the bloody disgusting species that wanted my blood desperately. One by one, my friends got their blood sucked. That sucker attacked their legs, hands, even their stomachs and necks. Oh gross. What about me? I prefer jumped into the cockroach’s nest than got my skin attached by that bloody sucker. I learned that leech hate cajuput oil because they don’t like the smell. So I smeared that oil into every inch of my skin. Then surprisingly, there was no leech dare to touch my skin. Haha
_______So, I could spend my life-on-the-wild happily at least. We cooked for our breakfast, lunch, and dinner by our selves. In the night, we hid on our jackets and made energen to warm our bodies up because it was very cold out there. Even in the morning, I could see vapor produced by my mouth when I was talking.
After spending three days surrounding by trees, we went back to our home - civilization. I was not happy to know that I was going back home and could sleep on the comfortable bed again. I do really love forest.
_______This is how my shoes looked like after walking for hours in the forest.
So, it was all the story about my first experience went mountain camping and I desperately love it.
